The Jinjoo Public Library is an international competition–winning project that redefines the role of civic facilities within a natural landscape. Located in the mountainous terrain of Jinjoo, the design carefully negotiates the slope to provide both accessibility from the main road and seamless integration with the surrounding park. The lower level accommodates a shared childcare and care center, transforming the building into an everyday community hub that extends beyond the traditional definition of a library.
The architecture’s form and orientation were refined to minimize visual impact on the adjacent residential areas while maximizing its relationship with Jangjae Park. A continuous green roof extends the park’s natural layer over the building, allowing the library to merge into the topography. This design approach reimagines the public library as a landscape-based civic infrastructure—one that connects ecological sensitivity with collective experience.
Internally, the library’s terraced sections follow the contours of the terrain, creating a fluid spatial sequence of reading platforms. Bookshelves are arranged along these stepped levels, forming a continuous “bookscape” that turns movement through the building into an experiential reading journey. The quiet reading rooms are positioned deeper into the slope to create intimate atmospheres, while upper levels open toward daylight and views, enhancing spatial diversity.
This gradation between enclosed and open spaces reflects the civic ambition of the project—to accommodate a wide range of public use while maintaining a human-scaled sense of comfort. The arrangement of reading zones, communal tables, and exhibition areas allows for both solitude and social interaction, reinforcing the idea of the library as an inclusive civic living room for the community.
At the entrance, a multi-purpose exhibition hall and public lobby operate as an active urban plaza, supporting events, learning programs, and informal gatherings. Through its layered integration of landscape, architecture, and public life, the Jinjoo Public Library demonstrates how contemporary civic facilities can cultivate both ecological harmony and social belonging within the city’s everyday fabric.
